Curve Letters with Illustrator's Warp Options

  • Now go to the Effect menu and select Warp. Any of those will work, though you can choose one that better fits your photo’s subject matter.

select Warp

  • You can know what a warp effect will look like before applying it by enabling the Rewind, Pause, Forward buttons in the Warp Options window. With Preview enabled, you can see how the currently selected warp has been applied to your image.

Warp Options window

  • Within each bending effect, you can set the sliders to adjust certain specifications. You can move them using your mouse just like you were turning a dial. If you want to change the color or other aspects of an effect, click on “Color,” “Effect Direction,” or “Bend.”

Effect Direction

  • Use the Style menu and try out different warp effects to bend your text this way and that. You can give your text all sorts of crazy shapes, but you might want to keep things simple enough so that they are understandable. Now click on Ok to apply.

Bend Text Using Illustrator’s Envelope Distort Tool

If wanting to create a more original bent text effect you can use envelope mesh. But even if you’re using warped text, it’s possible that the warp options panel will give you all the control you need.

  • Create your envelope as before using the Create tool but this time choose Object > Envelope Distort > Make with Mesh from the menu.

Envelope Distort

  • Right now you need to create your Envelope. You can see in the toolbar that your text has a grid over it. This is because the Unwrap Action has been ticked. Make sure this is activated before continuing! The more rows and columns there are, the easier it will be to distort your text. But if you want less distortion, one or two may work better for your needs.

create your Envelope

  • First, you need to decide how many columns and rows you’d like, then click OK. Next, locate the anchor points using the Direct Selection tool (Shift A) for curved text effects it’s often best to click on two anchor points at once. To tweak curves even further use the handles.
  • If you want to modify your mesh in any way, go to Object > Envelope Distort > Reset with Mesh. Then alter the number of rows or columns that appear within it. You’ll find this useful if you feel like your control over the mesh is too limited when creating it.

Reset with Mesh

  • Another option in the Objects Envelope Distortion rollout gives you more control over editable text. The Edit Contents command provides more functionality and allows for more precise distortion of the text as it wraps around your object. You have to select Object > Envelope Distort > Edit Contents from the main menu.

When do we have to Apply Curved Text Effects in Illustrator?

If you want to make text curving look good in your own designs for the sake of it, then go ahead and do so. But if you create some strange-looking text shapes that are difficult to read and people struggle to understand what it is you’re trying to say, they’re going to get turned off by the design as a whole.

For the most part, people don’t want their designs to be anything other than aesthetically pleasing. So, unless you want to create something deliberately abstract or awkward, we’d suggest having a look at other typography guides and best practices so as not to end up with unintelligible text.

Choose carefully from the selection of multiple curved text effects as they can really make a difference in your work. Always do attention when creating these types of effects so that you find the result which is most suitable for your project.
